Artist's Description
The land in the foreground used to be where the Kalamazoo River once emptied into Lake Michigan in my home town of Saugatuck, Michigan (USA). You can see peeks of the river remains through shrubbery on the far right which is now called Oxbo Lake. In 1901 the river basin was filled in when a new river mouth was dredged further north of here in order to facilitate cruise ships coming from Chicago and Milwaukee. This beautiful landscape sits behind a line of bluffs along the lake shore creating a unique interdunal habitat. In 2012 it was rescued from development forever and deemed the Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area. The fence designates the former private owner's property line bordering Oval Beach dune territory.
I work summers here and have written a photo essay about it from its early beginnings to present day . . .
