These elegantly arranged and beautifully presented pilings seem like cousins to the stones of ancient Stonehenge, Kathi.

Artist's Description

These dock pilings at Oval Beach in Saugatuck, Michigan USA supported the original docks that bordered the Kalamazoo River mouth where it emptied into Lake Michigan before the 1800's. In 1901, engineers rerouted the river mouth a quarter mile down the shoreline to better accommodate cruise ships and cargo ships arriving from Chicago and Milwaukee. Now these abandoned dock pilings represent a time fewer and fewer people remember. This photo shows the dropped water levels from the previous year. The Great Lakes water levels fluctuate every season depending on several weather conditions and the winter ice cover.
