Description
Breezy winds, contouring blue/gray skies and incoming waves create a picturesque scene surrounding the old dock pilings at Oval Beach in Saugatuck, Michigan.
The original 1800's pilings which held up the dock bordering the Kalamazoo River mouth now serve only to remind us of human ingenuity. In 1901 engineers dredged a new river mouth almost a mile north along the Lake Michigan shoreline in order to better facilitate cruise ships and imports such as timber, peaches and other fruit. The original Kalamazoo River made a winding sharp "S" curve making it difficult for ships to navigate. They filled in the river mouth with sand and left the old pilings which have survived the test of time! Ironically, with the advent of cars, trucks, trains and the highway system, local shipping eventually halted to a complete stop!
