Description
It's all about texture, shape and color when it comes to these sandstone beach cobblers found along Lake Michigan beaches! There is a great variety of colors depending on the environmental make up. For example, the reddish brown colors are usually due to iron seeping through the ground water infiltrating the stone during its formation and the mineral chlorite may be responsible for the greenish colors. One thing for certain, all sand stone contains crystals of quartz which can be seen in the sun as the tiny particles sparkle bright! These sand stones have been smoothed by the wind, water and you guessed it, sand acting as a polisher. I just love their unique quality and the gritty feel in my hand, but especially the fact that I'm holding a part of nature that was thousands and millions of years in the making!
