Description
Presented over aging driftwood, the Florida Fighting Conch, Strombus alatus, is another favorite among collectors and one of the more common finds along the Western Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coastlines.
Look for an attractive thick orange-brown conch with darker brown blotches, sometimes light tan blotches over creamy white. Knobs may be present on larger whorls. The interior is darker brown with a wide, thick lip bearing a distinct indentation near the posterior end and slight ribs.
They eat algae and other tiny marine plants
Size: Up to 3-4 inches
Habitat: Sandy and muddy bottoms in shallow water
Range: North Carolina to Florida, west to Texas
