Description
Lake Michigan develops an ice shelf when temperatures dip below the freezing point beginning at the shoreline. A light tower stands alone beyond the ice covered boulders dabbled with a fresh layer of snow. It's about a mile from the popular Oval Beach parking lot, so it's a difficult trek over uneven ice chunks and ridges, but so rewarding. This shot was taken at the Kalamazoo river mouth emptying in the big lake. While I was there, several flocks of terns kept flying over me. I don't know if my presence disturbed them, but they seemed to come out of nowhere as if to say hello!
